Papal Travels to New York City: Items from the University Archives
On view is a book commemorating the Vatican Pavilion at the New York World’s Fair, at which Pope Paul VI made a brief stop to extend his blessing after addressing the UN on October 4, 1965. Also included are articles and editorials from the student newspaper, The Torch, about the visits of previous popes in 1965, 1979, 1995 and 2008.


Halpern Collection of Popes and Saints Letters

Halpern Collection of Pope's and Saints LettersCongressman Seymour Halpern’s gift of 40 autograph letters written by popes and saints of the Catholic Church was donated to St. John’s University between 1966 and 1969.

There are 38 manuscript letters signed and two typescript pieces of correspondence. Of the 36 papal letters the oldest is on vellum from Pope Alexander IV, dated 1256; the most recent typewritten one is from Pope Paul VI, signed G.B. Montini on April 6, 1938. The four remaining letters are from St. Francis de Sales, St. Gregory Barbarigo, St. John Leonardi, and St. Vincent Maria Strambi.
